Every year 800 to 900 patients receive a total hip endoprosthesis at the Orthopaedic Clinic of the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena, Germany.
Primary coxarthrosis represents the vast majority of cases, with dysplastic coxarthrosis accounting for approximately 10% of all cases.

Particularly with this group of patients, implantation of an artificial joint in order to remove the pathological joint situation requires intense pre-operative preparation.

To do this, the surgeon typically uses navigation aids in advance of the surgical intervention to obtain clarity about the placement of the implant as well as about the type and size of the implant that shall be used.
That is why the FSU clinic turns to mediCAD planning software from southern Germany's Hectec GmbH for pre-operative preparation. This software tool is not tied to any particular manufacturer. Instead, it integrates planning slides from all major implant manufacturers, thereby enabling universal use in clinics with a wide range of implant types. The "Hips" or "Hips/Biometrics" planning modules are used to generate planning proposals for total hip endoprosthesis implantation. Proposals are generated on radiographs that are recorded, digitized, and calibrated in a standardized manner (similar to a CAD program).
